Teamwork, technology, and innovation: the name of the game when it came to our people bringing the second phase of the Savannah College of Art & Design’s Atlanta campus expansion to life — we’re enhancing student housing in a big way through this design build high-rise project. SCAD Atlanta is a project that hits close to home, especially for SCAD graduate and Senior Lighting Designer Ashley Beeler.
We sat down with Ashley to get the inside scoop on what went into designing the lighting throughout. From choosing intricate one-of-a-kind rope lighting to designing spaces based on their use, this project presented challenges that our team met head on and provided innovative solutions, including the use of VR glasses, to make every unique feature shine.
“This project stands out because it is a much larger-scale project. It's two large buildings, but it also incorporates a theater, classrooms, workshops, a dining hall, a bookstore, so it just took a lot more coordination effort to get through all the design of all the different areas,” Ashley said. “Because of the expansive lighting design work, we even used VR glasses in collaboration with the interior designer to be able to bring the renderings to life and share with the customer what it would look like in real life.”
Another approach that had our team working so efficiently and seamlessly with our partners at Clayco was the next-level technology used during the design phase. Our award-winning team of lighting designers used Revit on BIM360, which the interior designer, general contractor, architect, and others could access easily — keeping all parties on the same page with any changes that were made to the plans and the project moving, delivering a seamless experience for all parties involved.
In addition to working with the teams at Clayco, our lighting design team worked hand in hand with our team at the LINK — who were able to source and safely store all of the sparkling masterpieces and easily ship them directly to the job site when needed, ensuring on-time delivery and quality control of each unique product.
Thanks to our firm belief in teamwork, our design and LINK teams knew when it was time to bring everything to life, they didn't have to worry about job site challenges – thanks to Project Superintendent Jesus Ortero and his team. Even before the project broke ground, Jesus was working with the Ashley to make sure he fully understood the design concepts and had everything in place to implement their vision. Undertaking the 20-floor, 260-unit student housing high rise with an immovable completion deadline was no small feat for Jesus and the team but the end result was nothing short of a masterpiece.
